| Treating Shingles with Acupuncture
Herpes zoster, commonly known as shingles, is a viral disease characterized by a painful skin rash with blisters, often in a line around one side of the body. After a chickenpox infection, the virus usually becomes dormant but may become active again when the immune system is compromised, the virus may break out of nerve cell bodies and travel down nerve axons to cause viral infection of the skin in the region of the nerve. The virus spreads from ganglia along nerves of an affected segment and infect the corresponding area of skin supplied by one spinal nerve causing a painful rash. In Chinese medicine the nervous system and immune system can be triggerred very efficiently through acupuncture to start the healing process. Moxibustion is also applied directly to the affected area due to its strong anti-viral action. An improvement in the condition is usually noticed after the first treatment, although a few will be needed to completely treat the condition.
