What is chinese massage and bonesetting?
Chinese remedial massage is one of the first documented massage techniques in the world, referenced more than 2500 years ago in the Yellow Emperors Classic of Internal Medicine. Its practise is based on the same theory and principles as classical chinese acupuncture and martial arts. Chinese massage and bonesetting consists of various massage techniques of the soft tissue (muscles and tendons) of the body in conjunction with the stimulation of acupuncture points in order to establish a more harmonious flow of chi through a system of meridians (channels) and collaterals, allowing the body to heal itself naturally. Further manipulation techniques are also utilised to realign the musculoskeletal and ligamentous relationships (bone-setting).
Chinese remedial massage's focus on specific problems, rather than a more generalized treatment, make it an excellent alternative to conventional-style massage.
Chinese massage also has its own version of reflexology that differs from traditional western models. It is very useful as a complimentry treatment to both allopathic and alternative therapies. Patients can be shown easy massage techniques to help recovery between treatments.
The practise of meditation and martial arts are essential to a proper
understanding of 'classical' Chinese healing arts and its execution. The massage varies from light stroking to deep-tissue work which would be considered as fairly vigorous. Typical techniques would consist of a series of movements including pressing, pushing, kneading, tapping and stroking with palms, fingertips and knuckles. From the practitioners perspective it is similiar to practising various Tai Chi or Chi Kung exercises. However instead of self defense the aim is in healing others.
Chinese remedial massage has a long history of clinical studies showing efficiency in treating both acute and chronic medical problems. It is an effective preventative practise that will improve general wellbeing and health. Regular treatments have strong beneficial effects on the immune system and is a far healthier and more holistic alternative to anti-biotics and flu-shots. Currently Chinese remedial massage is offered in virtually every hospital in China and thousands of clinics around the world.
Typical examples of the wide range of llnesses responding to Chinese remedial massage:
Back pain, headaches, migraine, frozen shoulder, arthritis, repetitive strain injury, trapped nerves, sciatica, multiple sclerosis, sports injuries, stress, tiredness, weakness, anxiety, depression, hysteria, insomnia, weak immune system, colds, flu, bronchitus, sinusitus, asthma, indigestion, constipation, diarrhoea, indigestion, hernia, heart problems, vertigo, bladder infection, water retension, cellulite, PMT, painful or irregular periods, infertilty, stroke, facial paralysis, numbness, etc.
What to expect during a treatment:
Treatments usually lasts between 1 and 2 hours. A full body massage will take approximatelay 2 hours. Chinese massage can be done with or without clothing. It is therefore also suited for people who have religious objections or are uncomfortable removing their clothing. For a clothed treatment, wearing loose comfortable clothing is recommended. Depending on the injury or problem it is sometimes preferred that the patient remove their clothing or at least uncovered the area affected by injury. Therapeutic liniments such as "Dit Da Jao" are often used on injuries and torn ligaments etc. as it facilitates the healing process. The oils also help create the necessary 'heat' and circulation in treating certain conditions. A non-traditional chinese massage oil such as 'Arnica' is also effective in relaxing the muscles and removing inflamation.
Certain 'side-effects' may be experienced during or after a treatment. During the treatment patients may experience their nose starting to run or their tummy may start rumbling. This is actually a good sign as it is a result of improved circulation being achieved by the massage. Experiences after a massage vary from patient to patient but can range from feeling sleepy to feeling completely energised and recharged. Some patients may feel dizzy for a while. This is due to the body adjusting to its new more harmonious and balanced state. The dizziness will settle after a few minutes. The majority of the patients however feel a gradual mood and energy-level lift ± 20 minutes after the treatment.
